First is a guy taking up tons of space on one of the subway benches. No one else dared sit near him.

Next is of our security man. I lived there 9 months and they allowed us to use generic plastic bags as they would rebag everything into city sanctioned trash bags. Suddenly it did matter and I was scolded for not knowing their sudden enforcement of rules that didn't exist before. Don't get me wrong, I was on good terms with them, I even speak Korean pretty well. But this pissed me off. Not only was I paying their salary via maintenance but half of the time they are asleep. The only things they every did were help direct parking cars and enforce the trash policy. I would sneak my trash at 1 am and they were always asleep.

Anybody who spends time in Korea has seen at least one fight break out on the street, its participants drunk, and usually fighting over a female. These fights often end up being pretty lame, as far as spectator sports go.

For whatever reason, many Koreans are just not very confrontational. Perhaps it's the concept of "saving face", or maybe it's the general safety of the country (which allows them to pass out undisturbed on the streets), but the fact remains that many of them do not want to, nor know how to fight.

This is a (hilarious) example of one of these fights.

I'm actually surprised some Ahjumma didn't beat the hell out of him for taking up too many seats. When I took the picture, some of his neighbors started giggling and they got out their camera phones for shots as well.

I loooooove your blog. I've been sharing it with my friends. I now live in Los Angeles, but I have a blackout picture from Seoul. It's a photo of me and my girlfriends after a wild hotel party.

It was at a Yeouido gas station. While my friend was getting her flat tire changed, four of us took a good nap there.

Due to the ...explosive nature of the site gaining national (and in some cases, international) attention earlier this year, we thought it was best we take it down for a short time. There were a lot of factors that went into this decision, but we ultimately feel it's better to put the site back up, because, as the old adage goes, "Fuck the haters".

But down to brass tacks. Some changes for the time being:

Disabled comments. For a site like this, there really is no need to have open comments, as they generally materialize into three categories: Praise, derision, or pointless arguing. You can blame the last two for taking away the comment section -- the site is made to be enjoyed, and the comments often take away from that. If you can't enjoy it, GTFO.

Identity protection measures/covering faces. However, this will only be for those who are submitting or friends with the submitter in the pictures. Due to some who took it upon themselves to try and get submitters fired or in legal trouble, this has been an unfortunate recourse. Someone getting in trouble for merely taking a picture in public is unacceptable. However, this protection is not granted to those who take it upon themselves to black out in public. Being in the public sphere, they deserve no inherent identity protection, as far as we are concerned.

While we won't tell you what to do, we recommend that you try not to take pictures "posing over" blackouts (especially with the peace-sign, however tempting it might be). Many Koreans seem to view this as a sign of severe disrespect, as if you are highlighting some sort of "victory" over the drunken person passed out on the pavement, who clearly deserves the utmost social honors (walking over them and ignoring them completely).

Other than these, the site will pretty much be exactly the same. If you would like to help us, try to make your pictures more "artsy" --- in many cases, blackouts are truly that: A work of art. We want this site to be a testament to the tradition of Korean blackouts, not a site fostering hatred and racism, on either side of the fence.

My friends and I have really made finding Blackouts a competition.

The guy in the silver suit was out cold in a seat at the middle of the bar (in Hongdae) when we arrived at 11. His friend saw us notice him and moved him against the wall (to protect him?). An hour or so later, he was still there...but in a much more slumped position.

(Straw Hat) The next blackout Korea was in Papa Gorilla's. Pretty standard, but I don't remember taking it..which makes it a Blackout Korea while blacking out.

(Blue shirt) The final one was taken about 6.30 in Hongdae. I don't remember taking this either. You can tell we take the 'capturing Blackout Koreas' game seriously, when I've drunk so much I don't have memories, but yet i'm cognizant enough to take my camera out (and not lose it).

Walking up the street in Namdaemun Market (right by Gate 6) after the Korea vs Argentina match (18th June). This guy was yelling out drunk ramblings (in Korean), while everyone sat eating, completely unfazed and enjoying the show.

I'm not too sure what would be worse
1. That his friends are eating at the tables to the right in this picture (not in the photo)...and are letting him
2. his friends went 'meh, screw him and left him'

I like to think that so close to the subway, he said goodbye and told them he was going to the subway, and didn't quite manage it.

The first picture is my favorite. While my friend and I were waiting for the subway in Daejeon, Sunday 7:40pm ? This man strolled by us, gave us a "HEY" then sat down. His wife didn't seem so pleased with him. By the time the subway arrived and we were getting on, he was passed out cold. His wife didn't even wake him, she just left him there on the bench passed out. Needless to say, he didn't make it on our subway.

This was after a night of Cinco de Mayo celebrations Wednesday morning about 4:45am. We may have been the ones trashed off of all the tequila shots but they were the life of the party in McDonald's. ;)

Our other friend I thought was dead. We did check to see if he was breathing, he didn't even move a muscle the whole hour we were in there eating. I like the phone charger in hand and man purse on the ground. Wow, Korea is safe! :)

The same night we had one guy passed out for a few hours from about 1:30am-3:30/4am when his friends made him leave. He tried out about 50 different sleeping positions here are two of the many. How this bloke slept through all the LOUD music and shouting and shoving around him, impressed all of us.

To be fair, I can personally attest that violence is one of the things a lot of the G.I.'s in Itaewon and Hongdae (M.P's never patrol Hongdae despite the ban) are best at, so I'm sure if it came down to it they would do a fine job of killing Northies.

Jokes aside, I have also met a lot of solid men and women serving over here, it's just, as usual, a few bad apples ruining the whole bunch. I'll save you any further political commentary.

I took all these pictures at the same time on a weeknight during the summer of 2008. I was taking the green line home from gangnam station around midnight and saw a bunch of people blacked out all around me. You get a great variety here. The head nod blackout, the laying down blackout, and the leaning blackout. The picture of the businessman has a bonus with the woman blacked out sitting next to him.
